Introduction of Amis Kakeng Music Group

Kakeng is a bamboo instrument traditionally used by the Amis people to announce joyful news, particularly weddings. In their matriarchal society, when a man marries a woman's family, it's a cause for celebration. Family members carry Kakeng around the community, spreading their happiness. Through music, they aim to teach their children about their heritage. Their music group performs Amis folk songs using over thirty traditional bamboo instruments. They believe that when the next generation learns to speak and sing in Amis, their culture and traditions will thrive.

During the Center tour, we'll introduce bamboo cannons, traditional houses, and ritual houses.

Bamboo cannons produce deafening sounds and were used centuries ago to deter enemies or wild animals. They came from the Dianguang Community in the rift valley across the mountain.

Family Houses come in various types, each serving unique purposes such as cooking-specific Family Houses or housing for chickens and pigs. These houses notably lack windows and have very low eaves. When away for hunting, they burn wood inside to prevent insects. A traditional Amis house is rectangular. Its pillars are made of wood; the walls are built with boards and bamboo; the roof is covered with straws, reeds, and similar materials.

The priest’s home is also an education center for Amis males of all ages. Amis men are in charge of public affairs, such as organizing a harvest festival and fishing rituals. Women have no say in these matters. Women are not allowed to enter the priest’s house. Simply put, women take care of family matters and men take care of community matters.

    Try out the instruments

Follow the guide’s instructions and try their instruments. Most instruments they use are made by themselves using bamboo. Such as the Kakeng (bamboo bell), xylophone, the Chieftain’s staff with bells, different kinds of bamboo drums, and shakers.
